JPEG 2000

ZDNet has an article about the upcoming JPEG 2000 standard. New features include both lossy and lossless compression, wavelet compression which allows you to download low of hi-res versions depending on available bandwidth, and metadata fields. Of course we won't see good support in the browsers until a year after the standard is agreed. If it's not backwards compatible then we probably won't ever see it take off mainstream. (see PNG)
